We ask, “How do I stop this feeling?” or “What’s going to go wrong next?” These are questions of fear. But spiritual self-discovery invites a radical shift: not turning away from the worry, but turning into it with a different kind of question.

The Problem with Panic

Worry is a narrowing of the soul. It tells a story that tomorrow will be a catastrophe, and that you are too small to meet it. In that state, we forget who we are. We identify with the anxious voice. 1. “Who is the ‘I’ that is worrying right now?” Don’t answer with your name or your role. Look deeper. Is the worry permanent? Does it touch your core being, or is it a cloud passing through the sky of your consciousness? This question separates you from the noise.

2. “What would stillness ask me to notice?” Instead of asking “How do I fix this?” try inviting stillness. In the middle of stress, pause and whisper: What is here besides my fear? 3. “If I trusted that this difficulty has a hidden gift, where would I look for it?” This isn’t toxic positivity. It’s spiritual alchemy. Worry says, “This is only pain.” Self-discovery asks, “Could this also be a teacher?” Loss teaches attachment. Uncertainty teaches surrender. Your edge of fear is the very place where faith grows.

Question: “If I trusted that this difficulty has a hidden gift, where would I look for it?”

The Breath Question

But over the years, life has shown me, again and again, that change is not a threat; it’s a certainty. It’s the one guarantee we’re given from the moment we take our first breath. Nothing stays the same. Not our bodies, not our relationships, not our beliefs, not even the things we once thought were permanent parts of who we are.

And slowly, with time (and a lot of stubborn resistance), I’ve begun to understand something essential: change doesn’t come to punish us. It comes to grow us.

The most difficult transitions I’ve, faced like saying goodbye to people I loved, letting go of work that once gave me purpose, releasing spiritual practices that no longer spoke to me, were not failures. They were invitations-Invitations to evolve. to stretch, to become someone new.

Similarly, today’s political climate is characterized by deep polarization, the spread of misinformation, and the targeting of vulnerable communities. Fear and anger are often exploited to divide people, creating an "us versus them" mentality that undermines unity and compassion.

From a spiritual perspective, these patterns reflect a collective shadow—a manifestation of unresolved fear, pain, and separation. As we come into a new year filled with many questions and worries, I am reminded of the saying, "Turn the Other Cheek." In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shared a profound teaching:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also” (Matthew 5:38-39).

On the surface, this may seem like a call to passive submission, but a deeper spiritual exploration reveals that Jesus was pointing toward a revolutionary approach to human conflict—one rooted in transcending the ego and embodying divine strength. In our polarized times, with the rise of division, fear, and hostility, this teaching offers a radical pathway to healing and transformation, both within ourselves and the collective.

A Metaphysical Understanding of “Turning the Other Cheek”

To “turn the other cheek” is not an act of weakness but a profound spiritual stance. It challenges the reactive patterns of the lower self—pride, vengeance, and fear—and invites us to align with a higher vibration of love, courage, and divine justice.

Choose love as your guiding force. This does not mean excusing harmful behavior but holding a space for healing and transformation—for yourself and others.

3.Respond, Don’t React

Reaction is instinctual and often rooted in fear. Response is conscious and rooted in wisdom. Before acting, ask yourself, “What would love do here?”

4.Assert Boundaries with Grace

Turning the other cheek does not mean allowing harm to continue unchecked. It means responding from a place of strength and clarity. Set boundaries when needed, but do so without malice or revenge.

5.Pray for Transformation

Prayer is a powerful tool for shifting energy. Pray not only for your own strength but for the healing and awakening of those who act from fear or ignorance.

6.Trust Divine Justice

When wronged, trust that the universe operates on principles of balance and harmony. Release the need for personal vengeance and allow the divine to handle the scales.

It is  an act of sacred rebellion against the forces that seek to divide us, reminding us that true strength lies not in domination, but in the courage to rise above.

As we approach Thanksgiving, a holiday rooted in gratitude and reflection, we’re invited to consider the blessings of the past year. While many Americans see Thanksgiving as a commemoration of the 1621 harvest feast shared by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, it carries varied meanings for different communities.

Beyond that historical narrative, Thanksgiving provides an opportunity to pause and truly ask: What are we grateful for? In a year full of challenges, this question is more meaningful than ever. Gratitude helps ground us, reminding us of the things and people who support us, even through hardship. Yes, we’ve all felt the weight of a difficult year, but by focusing on what brings us joy or comfort—however small—we can shift our perspective.

This focus on gratitude is an act of resilience and renewal. As we look ahead, there is a shared hope for positive change. Let’s appreciate the chance to witness history, however challenging it may be, and recognize that we can emerge stronger. This year has shown the best and worst in us, but it’s also revealed incredible kindness, resilience, and generosity. Through every dark moment, there are people who choose to shine, and it’s often in those people and their support that we find our strength. Gratitude isn’t just for the good; it’s a choice to honor growth and change—even in hard times.

My own list of gratitude is long. I’m grateful for my home, my family, and the simple comforts of food and warmth. I’m grateful for the chance to serve and uplift, for every kind gesture that reminds me of the goodness in people. I’m grateful for health, for my ability to meet life’s challenges, and for the freedom to think, to discern right from wrong, and to seek the good. And I’m profoundly thankful for everyone who has supported me, encouraged me, and reminded me of the beauty in resilience.

So, I ask you to consider: What are you grateful for? What can you acknowledge with gratitude today to uplift your spirit?
